Melbourne’s refurbished garden courtyard at 120 Collins Street, has been recognised in the 2025 VIC Landscape Architecture Awards, receiving a Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects. This accolade highlights the project’s excellence in transforming urban space into a lively, sustainable environment.
The courtyard garden is an example of what can be achieved in dense city settings. It features:
- A mix of Indigenous and exotic plants
- Integrated seating areas
- Proximity to a smaller rooftop garden on an upper level
- Two beehives installed on site
These elements work together to create a green, welcoming space that encourages public interaction and relaxation.
The design pays tribute to the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin. Key symbolic elements include the bluestone flooring representing Melbourne’s urban landscape, boardwalks symbolising the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers and garden beds reflecting the rolling plains of Wurundjeri lands. This courtyard integrates cultural storytelling and offers a greenspace to which to retreat with native plants, supporting mindfulness and biodiversity.
