About

Built in 1889, the Grand Central Coffee Palace on Clarence Street, in the Sydney CBD was then converted into Hotel Arcadia in 1929. It wasn't until the 1960s where 151 Clarence Street was then turned into, and remained an office building only until recently.

Now, more than just a commercial office tower, stands Barrack Place. A 23-storey brick facade with co-working spaces and ground-level laneway running through to Kent Street sets it apart from the city landscape. That laneway and it's adjoining arcade, now make-up Sydney’s most vibrant food and beverage retail hub.

History

A new food and caffeine-filled laneway hangout has joined Sydney's CBD as Barrack Place opens to the public. Taking inspiration from the laneways of Melbourne and New York, the space has an industrial fit-out with a touch of art — there's a brick façade, black steel details and cobblestone streets, plus installations by Adelaide artist Amy Joy Watson.

Located in between Clarence Street and York Street, the precinct centres around an award-winning 23-storey tower that spans 22,000 square-metres of office space. But the ground level is the real food destination.

Cali Press

Cali Press was the result of a conversation amongst friends in the surf one afternoon. The idea quickly escalated into a life changing series of events with the now Cali Press team quitting their jobs and setting about becoming full time cold pressed juicers. The idea was to create the best possible cold pressed juice with the goal of bringing better health to peoples lives through juice, smoothies and wholefoods. The name Cali Press comes from our love and nostalgia for Golden California and its fun and natural way of clean living.

Monster Sushi

Fishbowl

Accepting takeaway, order-ahead pick up orders and running deliveries through a number of third parties: UberEats, Deliveroo and DoorDash. Contactless payments are in place. Follow their Instagram page for competitions and more.

The idea of fishbowl came about in the summer of 2016, inspired by a trip to the United States where a new wave of salad bars were emerging. Upon returning to sydney, we decided to make the most of Australia’s access to the finest quality sashimi and produce and create a destination that delivered people beautiful salads made fresh to order. We started by creating bowls of beautiful goodness and then we surrounded it with style, design, music and personality.

Public art

Amy Joy Watson

The eye-catching sculptural artwork display of Barrack Place was created by the talented Amy Joy Watson with Urban Art Projects. The feature combines colour and creativity to further enhance the buzzing retail precinct at 151 Clarence Street and has already become a talking point of the new space. Don't take our word for it, come down and see for yourself at Barrack Place.

Amy has been successful in winning several grants through CARCLEW, Arts SA and the Australia Council and was awarded the 2012 CARCLEW Ruth Tuck Scholarship which supported a 3-month studio residency at International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York in 2012. Amy was the recipient for the 2012 Critics Circle Emerging Art Prize, the 2013 Qantas Encouragement of Australian Contemporary Art Award for South Australia and was a finalist in the 2014 Redlands Art Prize, the 2015 Gold Coast Art Prize and for the 2018 and 2015 Fleurieu Art Prize.

Artists - Trevor Eastwood and Jason Douglas, Dalmarri

Lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora nation

In October 2021, artists Trevor Eastwood and Jason Douglas from Dalmarri hand painted the Barrack Place bollards in the laneway.

The artwork reflects a celebration of reconciliation, of coming together, sitting down, having a meeting, sharing a meal, or swapping a story. Vibrant colours represent the diversity in Australia whilst acknowledging, and paying respect to, the Gadigal People of the Eora nation. We continue the journey of reconciliation.

About the Artists

Trevor hails from the Ngamba people on the Barwon River, part of Kamiloroi country, on the outskirts of Brewarrina, NSW, and Jason is a Murri Man, whose people belong to the tribal lands of the Kabi Kabi of south-eastern Queensland, including Noosa. His father, Michael Douglas is Traditional Owner/ Native Title Kubi-Kubi.
