Stormwater filtration adjacent to wetlands

At Shearwater, on Sydney's northern beaches, there was a need to conserve protected wetlands adjacent to the site, as all rainwater runoff naturally ends up in the wetlands. Even if we designed infrastructure to divert from the wetlands there would always be the possibility of a 1 in 20 year (or more) rainfall event causing uncontrolled runoff.

Stormwater quality control measures now in place include:

  1. gross pollution traps which capture rubbish;
  2. bioswales to filter foreign objects and allow natural infiltration to the water table; and
  3. water quality ponds which allow silt to drop out of the water before it is discharged into neighbouring wetlands.
