An innovative solution for the management of stormwater was implemented at the C-Air Hillarys development in Perth to alleviate the need for unsightly kerbside drainage sumps. At the centre of the system is a public park on top of a large 'soak-well' constructed of box culverts. Runoff water from the super-elevated roadway that surrounds the park flows directly onto the park's vegetation without the need for gutters and pipes. All other roads on the development drain into the soak-well underneath. The system provides water for the sub-surface irrigation installed throughout public areas within C-Air, thus eliminating the use of potable supplies and helping to recharge the aquifer.
