Sewerage and stormwater infrastructure can be very expensive, and in many instances a large proportion of the cost is incurred to provide capacity to handle infrequent events. At Kooindah Waters on the New South Wales Central Coast there were two significant constraints impacting on the feasibility of conventional sewage treatment options: 1) the site is flat limiting our ability to use gravity systems, and 2) the council sewerage system is constrained at peak times in the mornings and evenings. To overcome these obstacles, we installed around 70 collection tanks that contain a grinder and pump. The pumps pump the sewer at low pressure to a dosing system which balances pH prior to sewage leaving the site and entering the council sewerage system. Each collection tank serves a group of four houses at peak times and then gradually discharges through the night and during the day when most people are asleep or not at home. |
