A large component of retail waste (and to a far lesser extent office waste) is organic and wet which, if it follows the path to landfill, can eventually convert to methane - a major greenhouse pollutant. To address this issue food recycling is provided in many Investa buildings, and in Sydney the food waste we collect is transported to the Earthpower Facility by our two principal waste contractors. At Earthpower the food is used to create 'biogas' which is similar to natural gas for powering vehicles and generating electricity for sale into the grid as green electricity. The process also produces a nutrient rich sludge by-product which is blended with other organic materials to produce a commercial grade fertilizer. |
