Our Results

Message from the CEO

We’ve always believed that a sustainable business model significantly enhances corporate results.

We are a large organisation with three business arms; applying an environmentally sustainable approach to our business is not a simple exercise. At Investa, however, we’ve always believed that a sustainable business is an innovative business, and an innovative business is one with favourable long-term prospects.

The past year has been challenging. Nevertheless, in 2008 Investa produced good economic, social and environmental results against a backdrop of significant transaction activity and a depressed national property market.

I believe that our successes of 2008 serve to illustrate the value of Investa’s responsible approach to business. I also note that analysing our environmental and social performance is a key step in setting the course for future success. Access to capital is becoming more limited; in 2009 we’ll need to be smarter, and our capacity to operate our buildings sustainably will be vital.

This document—our seventh annual sustainability report and our first full calendar year report—is the product of intensive research. Over 2008 we’ve learnt more about how our past actions have reduced our environmental impact. Our research is ongoing and we hope to report further on our progress in next year’s sustainability report.

Investa is proud to serve as a model of what’s possible, particularly in regard to reducing emissions from property. We’ve continued to receive awards in 2008, including the:

We’re also aware that our learning can assist others. In 2008 we developed a Diploma of Sustainability in Practice for Investa staff; in 2009 we hope to work with stakeholders to promote ‘green skills’.

In a year of sustained success, we’ve experienced some changes that have affected our environmental performance. In the last quarter of 2008 our home building business was separated to facilitate greater focus of each business area. Clarendon is now a stand-alone company. I also note the continuing rise of overall waste from our buildings. We welcome the opportunity to engage with tenants on reducing their environmental impact, in this regard and in general.

I trust you will draw encouragement from this report and warmly anticipate your feedback.
